Dark mode comes to WhatsApp on iPhones and Android phones: Here’s how you can enable it

WhatsApp is rolling out dark mode to both iPhones and Android devices. The much-awaited addition can be termed as one of the ‘biggest’ new feature of the year 2020. In its blog post, WhatsApp has termed dark mode as the most requested feature from its users everywhere. The app maker, with over 2 billion users, claims that the feature will help reduce eye strain. Dark mode helps reduce ‘eye strain’
Dark mode, according to WhatsApp, is designed to reduce eye strain in low light environments.

New colour scheme ‘minimises eye fatigue’
WhatsApp claims that while choosing colors, they wanted to minimize eye fatigue and use colors that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively.

How to get it: Download latest version of WhatsApp
Download the latest version of WhatsApp from your respective app stores, App Store for iPhones and Google Play Store for Android phones

How to get it: WhatsApp version for iPhones — 2.20.30; for Android phones: 2.20.47
The dark mode feature is available on iOS app version 2.20.30. As for Android users, its 2.20.47 version.

Android OS compatibility: Android 9 and below
All Android smartphones running on Android 9 and below will support the update. WhatsApp has rolled out the dark mode support not only for Android 10 handsets, but also for previous-generation OS.

Enabling dark mode on Android phones
Tap on the three dot icon on the right corner to go to Settings. Then tap on Chats followed by Theme. From here, choose Dark from the menu and tap OK.

Remember, smartphones running on Android 10 do not need to follow these steps
WhatsApp supports system-wide dark mode, so users on Android 10 can use dark mode by enabling it in system settings.

iPhones running on iOS 13 too can enable it in system settings

iPhones running on iOS 12 and below will not get dark mode support on WhatsApp
